Llandybie made the short hop to Penybanc for this Div 4B local derby. Early pressure from the visitors yielded a number of penalties, with Jake Lewis finally going for goal to open the scoring. Llandybie gave away a couple of penalties for back chat with Penybanc firing the ball to touch. From the lineout, swift hands put Aled Rees Jones in for a try, which he converted to lead 7 – 3 after 17 minutes. Banc threw the ball wide for a good try from Lewis Roderick, converted by Jones, to go further ahead after 25 minutes. Llandybie came to life with full back wayne Williams putting Rhys Jones on a run to the try line, only for the linesman to put his flag up for a foot in touch. Tybie kept up the pressure with Banc giving away a number of penalties, resulting in a yellow card, with the referee finally losing patience and awarding a penalty try. Llandybie turned down a penalty from almost in front to go for touch and a forward drive, but Banc held out to lead 14 –10 at halftime.
In the second period, both sides tried to go wide with good carries from Josh Powell and Lloyd Thompson with centre Keri Davies coping well as a stand-in eight. Dafydd Wyn Jones threw in well to the lineouts, and the scrum was sound.
Penybanc went wide again with Steff Lewis running a good line, cutting inside to score, converted by Aled Rhys Jones, and with Llandybie going forward but rucked badly with Banc stealing the ball to break away to score a bonus point try converted by Jones to lead 28 -10.
Penybanc’s indiscipline cost them cards, but Tybie could not capitalise on it. From another penalty, Llandybie took a quick tap to put Owain James over for a try; the conversion failed. Both sides made it an entertaining game with Penybanc running out winners 28 – 15.
Llandybie put in a lot of effort with a very young side. There is a lot of work to do defensively, but the team shows a lot of promise. Next week, Llandybie are home to Fall Bay.
