Llandybie welcomed local rivals Pantyfynnon for this 4B West fixture looking to improve their home form. An early penalty by Luke Lynne gave Panty the lead after two minutes. Llandybie missed a penalty but Ifan Davies did not miss the next to level the scores.
The visitors kicked the ball long fielded by full back Iestyn Richards at full throttle to put Cellan Ingram Jones clear looking inside to centre Steffan Jones who stepped round the defender to score in the corner. Pantyfynnon put a penalty to touch winning the lineout to drive over for a score by Steff Morris converted by Lynne to lead 10 – 8.
The tackling was full on by both sides but Llandybie centre Rhys Evans was punching holes in the midfield area. Llandybie’s lineout was good, hooker Dafydd Wyn Jones finding Owain James and Konnor Davies with regularity. With Panty in their 22 the hosts turned the ball over to go wide. Ifan Davies threw a long flat pass to Iestyn Richards at pace to put winger Tom Howell in for a nice try converted by Ifan Davies to lead 15 – 10 at half time.
In the second half Pantyfynnon used their heavier pack to put pressure on the Llandybie eight. The hosts experienced tight head Rhys Cann encouraged the pack to stick to the task ahead with a number of highly contested scrums. Panty kept the pressure up and finally managed to score with forward drives and pick and go’s for a try by Jake Anthony with Lynne adding the conversion.
Scott Jones worked hard for the hosts as did captain Jordan Tommason just back after a long injury. Davies kicked another penalty for Llandybie to lead by a point but Lynne replied to put Panty back in the lead 20 – 18.
With time running out from the last scrum Llandybie summoned all their power to drive the Panty eight back gaining a penalty. Ifan Davies stepped up to slot the goal to win the match. Panty still had a kick at goal from halfway but Lynne’s kick fell short. Llandybie secured their third win of the season to move above Pantyfynnon in the table. A highly contested match, a credit to both teams played in a good spirit, also well controlled by the referee.
MOM for Llandybie was flanker Owain James for a solid display particularly in the lineout.
