Llandybie welcomed Pontyates for this 4B West League fixture. For the first ten minutes both sides kept probing looking for an opportunity, but with honours pretty even. From a penalty to touch, second row Connor Butler took the throw from Dafydd Wyn Jones to set up a drive with Scott Jones and Josh Powell supplying the power for captain Ioan Rees to dive over for a try, converted by Ifan Davies to open the scoring after 12 minutes. Pontyates missed a penalty but put together some good attacking play with forward drives resulting in a score for Rod Greenie converted by Nathan Davies to tie the scores. Ponty kicked a penalty from Davies whilst Llandybie turned down a shot at goal in the 22 going for touch instead but then overthrew in the lineout. Full back Steffan Jones made some good tackles for the hosts whilst forward Josh Powell kept the hosts going forward with some tough carries. Half time arrived with the hosts 7 points to 10 down.

The first ten minutes of the second half decided the outcome of the game with Pontyates scoring 3 quickfire tries from Ross McFarlane, Kwanu Smith and Paris Smith, converted by Nathan Davies stemming from poor defensive play from Llandybie with a number of missed tackles by the backs who seemed to have switched off. Pontyates now led 31 points to 7.

The Llandybie pack was having a hard time against the heavier Pontyates eight with scrum half Jake Lewis having a tough time behind a retreating pack but to their credit they did not throw in the towel but fought back. The hosts made some changes and a forty yard burst from Connor Thomas almost got him to the line but the forwards arrived en bloc to keep possession. Good drives and prop Cristian Davies scrambled over for a score with Ifan Davies adding the extras. The hosts had woken from their slumber and were now up for the fight and from a penalty took a tap setting up a pod move resulting in Ifan Davies diving over to score a try which he converted with the score now 21 – 31. Pontyates missed a penalty but Ifan Davies kicked two more for the hosts to move within four points.

A good thirty yard sprint by Cellan Ingram Jones kept the pressure up but he put a foot in touch. Rhys Davies, Scott Jones and Dafydd Wyn worked hard in the loose and Josh Powell kept carrying for the team. With time running out Pontyates kicked their final penalty to hold Llandybie at bay to run out winners.

Another game Llandybie could have won, but a lot to work with for new coaches Justin Lloyd and Jason Rosser who have only had a couple of sessions with the players. MOM for Llandybie was Josh Powell, carried all afternoon for the team.
