


Llandybie welcomed Pontyates for this 4B West league match hoping for their fourth league win on the bounce. Three minutes in, scrum half Steffan Jones made a half break on the blind side feeding winger Rhys Jones who pinned his ears back to canter in from halfway with Dafydd Wyn Jones unusually missing an easy conversion. From the restart second row Josh Powell burst two tackles to release full back Wayne Williams to motor from halfway to score in the corner with Jones nailing the conversion from the touchline. Llandybie 12 -0 ahead after six minutes.
Pontyates put in some sustained attacks and after four phases managed to score in the corner from hooker Jamie Lewis. The response by the hosts was immediate with Steff Jones tidying up from a lineout to feed flyhalf Rhys Evans who chipped ahead to win the race to touch down for a nice score converted by Jones. Pontyates made a good break but winger Rhys Jones made a good tackle and won the turnover. Llandybie advanced with Steff Jones making a good tackle with Ponty holding on giving a penalty. Captain Jordan Tommason took a quick tap making 20 yards passing to winger Harry Connick who outpaced the defence to score coming round under the posts to make the conversion easy for Jones. Bonus point after 32 minutes. Both sides were throwing the ball about making good viewing for the big crowd. Prop Brandon Chandler saw yellow for a trip and Ponty threw the ball wide down the right with the hosts missing a couple of tackles for Dion Davies to score. Half time it was 26 -10 to the hosts.
It was important that Llandybie scored first in the second half. The hosts brought on Rhys Cann to replace Chandler and his first task was to take an overthrow in the lineout and keep the momentum.
Tommason took another tap penalty on 20 yards brought down short, the ball rucked back to Rhys Evans to put centre Ioan Rees through at pace to score converted again by Jones. Steff Coombes made a heavy tackle on the Ponty prop gaining a penalty which Jones slotted for a 36 -10 lead.
From a Ponty attacking lineout two Llandybie players collided to give an opening to flyhalf Kwami Smith to score a converted try (36 -17).
No 8 Merlyn McClelland and Man of the match Josh Powell were carrying really well for the hosts whilst Rees and Keri Davies tackled well at centre. More attacks came from the hosts with Connor Butler touching down converted by Jones to get over the 40 point mark. The visitors never gave up with Smith stepping his way through for another converted try. Llandybie continued to work hard and from a scrum out wide Connick was put clear for the final score of the game converted by Jones.
With two minutes remaining Llandybie’s Ryan Davies was injured in a tackle and fractured his fibula, with the referee calling both sides who readily agreed to call time after such a bad injury. With his 19th birthday the next day this wasn’t the present Ryan wanted.
Llandybie won 50 points to 24 in a really entertaining match somewhat overshadowed by the late injury. Next week Llandybie are home to Bynea.
