Mid-table Llandybie welcomed second placed Furnace for this Division 4B West fixture. The visitors were missing a few players as were the hosts, without a recognised Number 10 but both sides still fielded strong squads.
The first ten minutes were all Llandybie with Furnace unable to get out of their own half, with the hosts defensive line up very quickly and they crossed the whitewash only to be called back for an infringement at the ruck. However from the scrum after 20 minutes the hosts drove forward with No 8 Ryan Davies picking up but tackled just short but flanker Cam Morgan was on hand to dive over with hooker Dafydd Wyn Jones hitting the upright with the conversion. Furnace saw yellow for hands in the ruck and from another scrum drive Josh Powell forced his way over for a try converted by Jones.
Furnace saw yellow again for a high tackle with the hosts making the most of their numerical advantage with a try from a powerful run by Merlyn McClelland to lead 17 – 0.
Furnace finally got over the halfway with Llandybie conceding a penalty which the visitors duly converted. Props Rhys Cann and Christian Davies were quick to the rucks forming solid pillars to retain possession whilst stand in fly half Rhys Evans kicked well for position and put through a little grubber for centre Ioan Rees to touchdown converted by Jones to lead 24 – 3 at half time with a bonus point in the bag.
Llandybie’s pack were playing well at scrum and lineout but Furnace came out more determined in the second half. A heavy tackle in open play caused a mass brawl with the referee calling both captains to cool things down and continue to play the attractive rugby they had served up for the large crowd. Scrum half Steff Jones was a live wire keeping the Furnace back row occupied. The hosts defence was well organised with big hits from Rees and Josh Watkins whilst carrying duties were shared by McClelland, Powell and Davies. Man of the match Rhys Evans put in a little chip over, with the visitors defence making a mess of it for Harri Connick to touch down converted again by Jones and soon after captain Jordan Tommason took a short penalty to charge over with Jones adding the extras.
The hosts tackling was a feature of this success in which they had about 90% of territory to win by 38 points to 3 to move them above Pontyates in the table. Next week Llandybie play away at local rivals Pantyffynnon.
